Sheryl Sandberg has been my muse these days. I’ve been all over every article, TED talk and most recently, the Sheryl Sandberg/Oprah Facebook interview. I hadn’t heard anything about the interview but the thought of putting Sheryl Sandberg and OPRAH together is just ridiculous. I think Sheryl Sandberg did an amazing job of facilitating the interview and her quick witted side commentary added to my obsession with her. To be honest, I wasn’t that blown away by Oprah’s answers in the first 45 minutes or so of the interview until they took questions from the audience and someone asked Oprah:
What advice would you give to women that are trying to emulate even half of your success?
Oprah responded with: …How can you be used in service…key word is service… to yourself first - serve yourself so that your health - emotionally, spiritually, physical is stable so that you have enough to give to the rest of the world because you can’t give what you don’t have…”
I rewound that part of the interview about 4 times and it hit me hard each time. The reason why I liked it so much is because what I gained is that you may not have what you may want to give to others just yet. How can I build myself into a person that has enough to offer a friend, partner, company, etc? She encourages us to nurture ourselves and recognizes that personal growth is correlated with how much or how effectively we can serve others.
I feel like I’m learning and growing every day - through my mistakes, simple life lessons, and gaining new skills (nunchuk skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills). I anticipate fostering that growth and can only hope that what I am learning and the individual that I’m growing into will allow me to give back to others in the most healthful, productive way.
You are welcome. Haha just kidding! Had to do it…
