The 49th New York Film Festival: The Royal Tenenbaums

A few months back, Brenda told me about an event for the 10th anniversary of the first screening of The Royal Tenenbaums at the New York Film Festival. I locked it away as a must-do-when-the-time-comes event. You see, my brother got me hooked on all the Wes Anderson digs early on. It’s like I grew up with Mr. Wes. I needed to go – even if it meant I fly solo.

I met up with Alex at the Apple store on the UWS first. Wes was there answering questions about directing the film, his infatuation with New York and you could actually very clearly see the quirkiness and wit in him that is so present in his films as well. We parted ways and I headed over to the Alice Tully Hall to watch The Royal Tenenbaums. I quoted all the lines in my head and was basically smiling to myself like an idiot the entire time.

The film ended, and the spotlight hit the balcony and Wes Anderson, Bill Murray, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Anjelica Huston were there (!!!). I didn’t realize what was going on at first and when it finally hit me – I pointed to the four and let out an audible “AHH!” Who I was pointing for, I don’t know, but I did it, and it was great. The event was amazing and brought all sorts of feelings of nostalgia and you know, bliss. Quite possibly one of my favorite events thus far. The only serious let down was that I couldn’t challenge Bill Murray to a round of golf. Oh well, next time!
