J’etudie Francais!

I’ve been taking a French Class through Fluent Brooklyn in Midtown every Tuesday for 3 hours…7-10PM. I love learning languages and I’ve always wanted to learn French so its been a really great experience. In a language 1 class, the trick is to practice speaking/writing despite knowing you’ll make mistakes along the way, and make use of every possible vocab word you learn (or thought you learned). The product, however, leads to some serious laughs and breathes life into the word random. This class has been no different. Here are some specific examples of the things I’ve heard in class that have prevented me from holding it together:

  1. Inability to pronounce common French words after 7 weeks of usage e.g. pronouncing de - as “day” instead of “duh”
  2. Using other languages mid sentence e.g. “nadar” Spanish infinitive to swim instead of “nager”
  3. My absolute favorite - using an English word and Frenchifying. e.g. “le pool” instead of “piscine”
  4. Randomness of paragraph structure… see below…

Our last class today is the perfect example of #4. We worked as a group and wrote letters to each other introducing ourselves, telling our interests etc. We wrote 3 letters. The letter pictured below is absolutely the culmination of only 7 weeks’ effort to learn the language and our awesomely French 1 skills:

Translation:

Dear PJ,

My name is Kate and I am Liz’s lawyer. I am 35 years old and I am crazy. I speak with Liz every morning but not on Tuesdays because its my birthday. I hate soccer. *Are you single? If so, do you want to drink a beer with me?* Bye bye!

* Proud to say I came up with this part of the letter.
