Favorite Things: May

I’m lazy and at home so I’ll bucket Eat and Play together for this month. I went to Governor’s Island on Memorial Day Weekend for Brewers’ PicNyc, which is the “ultimate city picnic” featuring local breweries and street food. For $25, I got 2 beers and 1 food taste. When you are lucky like me, though, you bump into someone who is leaving the event and graciously accept their offer for their VIP wristband which entitles you to unlimited beer and food tastings. I committed a cardinal sin - IPAs in the NYC summer heat, but it made the grilled cheese sandwiches, and mac and cheese from the Gorilla Cheese NYC truck all the more tastier.

Governor’s Island itself is a force to be reckoned with. The island was formally the headquarters for the U.S. army and through some preservation efforts, now stays open during the summers for people like me to enjoy. To get to Governor’s Island, you can take a short ferry ride from the Battery Maritime Building in the Financial District for free. When there isn’t an event on the island, you can bring your bicycle, have a picnic, catch an amazing view of Manhattan or what have you. Governor’s Island is a brilliant getaway. I’m anxiously anticipating another visit mid-June for Governor’s Ball!
