n00b Chronicles: Air Conditioning

I’ve lived in Cali all my life so I’ve been pretty spoiled with perfect weather. Its been realllll toasty in NYC these days so I wanted to see what I’d be getting if I was still back in my hometown - Fremont, CA compared to the sauna I’m living in here. On average, New York for this week was 20.8 degrees hotter than Fremont. If you know me, you will know that this is NOT okay because I don’t do so well in hot weather. Namely because I sweat easily. (Okay - you may think this is unattractive but boys, I will have you know that my response to heat is just a reflection of my super Thermoregulation aka heat loss through some efficient evaporation.)

I never needed air conditioning in my house and up until a month ago, I didn’t think I needed one in my new place either. But really, this place really wants you to work for the fun you have and desperately wants you to go broke. Air conditioning is so crucial for summers in New York. Most apartments don’t have them so you need to buy your own unit (anywhere from $130-250+ depending on size) and have them installed ($25 if you have an awesome super who will do it for cheap). Lately, my biggest challenge is finding the perfect temperature and balancing staying cool and cranking up the energy bill.

Here is what has helped so far….I’m still trying to perfect AC use:

  1. Use at 60 degrees after showers while getting ready.
  2. Turn on AC with timer at 60 degrees for 2 hours (enough to fall asleep and stay asleep for a while).
  3. Use at 69 for general use until cool and turn to fan after feeling cool.
